As environmental leaders race to solve the pressing issue of climate change and global warming, carbon sequestration companies have emerged as the frontrunners in this journey. Some see these as the silver bullet that is going to save the world, but I think it is more a tool than a solution.
Carbon sequestration, or carbon capture, is the process of using giant fans to blow air through massive CO2 filters and release the collected CO2 deep into the earth. This will prevent it from resurfacing and leaving it trapped for centuries. To be effective, each machine will need to run on clean and renewable energy.
Despite its potential, carbon sequestration remains expensive for individual consumers. However, for large companies committed to achieving net-zero emissions, it is often considered a necessary investment. Even countries such as Australia, one of the biggest producers of coal, are playing into this by promising a net-zero status by 2050. The question remains, will Australia stop using coal and switch to a more renewable energy source? Most believe they won’t stop using coal. Instead, they will rely on carbon capture to extend the transition period to a more sustainable source of energy. Similarly, airlines face challenges in adopting completely green fuels, opting for carbon offsets to attain a “carbon-neutral” status. To me it feels as though carbon capture is being misused to hide a more important issue: the staggering amount of carbon being emitted each year.
Now this is not saying that carbon capture is not helpful. It is a very powerful tool. This technology may be able to replace the job of up to 40 million trees to remove CO2 annually.
Society is however bearing the cost of removing carbon. As of now, to remove CO2 from the air, many companies charge $200-$600 per ton. In the future, Jan Wurzbacher of Climeworks, one of the most popular carbon capture companies, expects the price of carbon capture to go down significantly. Some companies estimate that it will go from the previous $600/ton to a much lower $10-100/ton. This would significantly improve the effectiveness of carbon capture as it would introduce a whole new consumer base in the average citizen. Klaus Lacker, an engineer running the Center for Negative Carbon Emissions at Arizona State University, calculates that several thousand carbon-removal plants around the globe would be enough to bring the global CO2 levels down enough to prevent permanent damage.
The IPCC (United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) estimates that it will take around 12 billion metric tons of CO2 annually to reach the goal of 2c. This is the agreed-upon amount of CO2 at most, the earth will be safe under. In my next blog, I will talk about the different natural ways to sequester carbon, so stay tuned!
