Think back to COVID-19. Everyone was working from home. The massive shift to remote work during the pandemic wasn’t just a weird change—it was a forced environmental experiment globally. Now, as we settle into post-pandemic work patterns, the crucial question needs to be asked: is working from home better for the planet?

Remote work has transitioned from a previously luxury perk to an expected option for many professionals. By 2025, an estimated 22% of the American workforce—roughly 33 million people—are projected to work remotely. 

The environmental equation isn’t as simple as “no commute = better for the planet.” Below are a few statistics:

  • Full-time remote workers can reduce their carbon footprint by an impressive 54% compared to office workers
  • Hybrid workers (2-4 days remote per week) can achieve carbon reductions of 11-29%
  • Minimal remote workers (just 1 day per week) see only about a 2% reduction

The average office worker generates approximately 33 kgCO2e per week, while full-time remote workers produce just 13.35 kgCO2e weekly. Hybrid workers fall in between at about 21 kgCO2e per week.

The most obvious environmental benefit of remote work is eliminating the daily commute. With transportation accounting for roughly 26-28% of total emissions in countries like the US and UK, this is significant. The average American commute spans 32 miles and contributes about 3.2 tonnes of CO2 per person annually.

The World Economic Forum notes that telecommuting could permanently remove 14 million cars from US roads a major win.

Working from home isn’t environmentally free, however. When offices were emptied during lockdowns, residential energy use spiked by 15-30% in some regions. Remote workers need to heat, cool, and power their homes during hours they’d typically be at the office.

Interestingly, researchers from Cornell University and Microsoft found that the carbon impact of information and communication technology is relatively minor in the bigger environmental picture.

For many organizations and individuals, the hybrid model represents the best of both worlds. Working remotely 2-4 days weekly strikes a balance that significantly reduces emissions while maintaining workplace connections.

However, the environmental benefits of hybrid work aren’t automatic. Potential energy savings evaporate if office buildings remain fully operational despite reduced occupancy. Increased non-commute travel on remote days (running errands, social activities) can offset some carbon gains.

Whether you’re remote, in-office, or hybrid, here are ways to minimize your work-related carbon footprint:

  • For remote workers: Use energy-efficient home office equipment, optimize heating/cooling, and consider renewable energy for your home
  • For office workers: Use public transportation when possible, encourage energy-efficient systems
  • For companies: Consider downsizing office space for hybrid workforces, implement seat-sharing, install lighting controls and occupancy sensors

Remote work isn’t as simple as it is better for the environment, but paired with conscious sustainability choices, it can substantially reduce your/a company’s carbon footprint. Whether you’re typing away at home, collaborating in the office, or mixing it up in a hybrid arrangement, being mindful of your energy use and transportation choices is key.
