If you have been keeping up with the news, there is a chance that you have come across articles titled something like “Biden Approves Alaskan Oil Project.” To give context, this announcement was just made last week (March 13th, 2023). This specific project is called the Willow Project that ConocoPhillips host. It is aimed at drilling in the Alaskan North surface in search of increasing oil production. This project has projected a whopping 576 million barrels of oil produced in the next 30 years.
During the lifespan of this project, an estimated 263 million greenhouse gasses are going to be released which not only undermines Biden’s environmental promises but according to some projections reported recently, significantly undermines the work of every single renewable energy project undertaken thru 2023 by an estimated double the amount that they are projected to save. Another facet stated that this project is the equivalent of 70 coal-fired power plants which is insane.
The approval of this project is a major leap in the wrong direction on the front of finding renewable energy sources. With all these very innovative companies coming up, we were looking to have an auspicious future with many promises ending in 2050. Carbon emissions were looking to decrease by around 70%. With operations such as the Willow Project, our future is looking increasingly grim.
In my next blog post, I will talk about the legal reasons why this project could not be stopped and what is being done to blunt its impact as the project is going to take a major toll on the planet and also put at risk the native people of Alaska who live close to the drilling sites given the risk of exposure to pollution. Please use the link below to sign the petition to stop the willow project.
